With the race quickly approaching to it's Primary close next Tuesday, I wanted to share a passage from one of my favorite novels, East of Eden. There are few that can claim the title of a truly American author as capably as John Steinbeck. Though the story in East of Eden is a fantastic one, dealing with many issues, there is a distinct flavor and understanding flowing from the pages of Steinbeck's work that transcend the story of the Travis family. For the past two years, I've worked with people to help start their own businesses, and hundreds of people have told me about their ideas for companies. I've heard everything from home beer brewing solutions to the next Facebook, but the biggest difference between the next Facebook and Facebook is that Facebook has been proven to work. While having an idea is great and there are good and bad ideas, ideas in themselves are relatively worthless. You don't purchase the idea of a car. You purchase a car that has proven its value to you. Someone who continually invests in an idea and not a proven business model isn't an investor for very long.
